Decimal Arithmetic

Division

I. Division by a Whole Number

  • Ignore the decimal point; use Long Division as with whole numbers

  • Put the decimal point upon the answer above in the same spot as the dividend (number being divided)

1.26/7 = 0.18

II. Division by a Decimal Number

Example 4A.

The result from 1.26 ÷ 0.7 is the same as that from 12.6 ÷ 7. Thus

Hence 1.26 ÷ 0.7 = 1.8
