Harder Problems

We now take a look at problems which involve more than one operation. You will need to remember BEDMAS to do the operations in the right order.

Examples

Try each question below. Click on the question marks to see step-by-step solutions only as you need help or to check your solutions.

  1. (1/2 + 1/3)*(3/2 - 5/4) = ((1*3+2*1)/(2*3))*((3*4-2*5)/(2*4))= ((3+2)/6)*((12-10)/(8))= (5/6)*(2/8)= (5*2)/(6*8) = 10/48 = 5/24
  2. 1/(1/3 + 1/5) = 1/((1*5+3*1)/(3*5))=1/(8/15)=15/8
  3. 2 and two thirds + one and one fourth - 5/6 = (2*3+2)/3+(1*4+1)/4-5/6=8/3+5/4-5/6=(8*4)/(3*4)+(5*3)/(4*3)-(5*2)/(6*2)=(32+15-10)/12=37/12
  4. (3-2/3)/(5/6)=((3*3-2)/3)*(6/5)=(7/3)*(6/5)=(7*6)/(3*5)=42/15
  5. -7/6+14/15+8/45=(-7*15+14*6+8*2)/90=(-105+84+16)/90=-5/90=-1/18
  6. -5/16=3/8+1/4=(-5*1-3*2+1*4)/16=10/16=5/8
